Sedges are famous for their grass-like appearance and their high protein content. Moreover, they have the nutritional value occasioned by the fibers. Lucy and other cavemen (and cave-women) dug for the tubers and collected their seeds for consumption.

The paleo diet also comprised seeds from many grass families, even though it required painstaking labour to collect them. However, they were readily available and were a source of the much needed carbohydrates.
